Guide: ADT bundle downloads / Import ADT to Android Studio

Where to download the ADT Bundle (Eclipse, ADT plugin, and Android SDK)

Google recently released Android Studio 1.0 and have ceased support for the ADT bundle. If you want to setup the environment the book mentions in Chapter 1 (or need it for old projects) you can get it here:

Don't forget to install JDK 7. If you install x64 ADT, install x64 JDK and JRE.

Another option is the Tegra Android Development Pack by Nvidia. It installs a fully functional Android development environment which includes the above and more.

How to update the ADT plugin

The ADT plugin included (23.02) in the bundles isn't the latest, but you can still update it to the final release (23.04).

1. Select Help > Install New Software
2. Work with: p2repo - https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/
3. Select Developer Tools and Next
4. Next, Accept the license agreement* and Finish

This is supposed to be the final release of ADT so at some point you may still want to move on to Android Studio.

Importing projects from ADT into Android Studio is fairly straight forward:
From https://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/migrate.html

1. Export project in Eclipse.
2. In Android Studio, close any projects currently open. You should see the Welcome to Android Studio window.
3. Click Import Non-Android Studio project.
4. Locate the project you exported from Eclipse, expand it, select the build.gradle file and click OK.
5. In the following dialog, leave Use gradle wrapper selected and click OK. (You do not need to specify the Gradle home.)

It should be noted that as of version 1.0, Android Studio does not fully support the Android NDK library (for compiling native code in C/C++). For the purposes of the book, this will not matter... but native code runs exponentially faster, so this can be very important for complex high end games.

Hello, I was just wondering, should I use Android studio or should I just use Eclipse and get the plugins. The downloads for the bundle don't work on my system. If I try to do certain things it crashes.

If you are starting from the beginning, definitely use Eclipse. Java is not supported on Android Studio.

I was wondering about once I get to the Android part. I downloaded the bundle and it doesn't function correctly. I downloaded the latest Eclipse and that works fine. So, my main question is once I get to the Android section should I be using Android Studio or Eclipse with Android plugins. Thanks...

Could you tell me a little more about your system configuration? Which OS are you using? And what causes these errors?

When I first got the book I scanned through it and looked for all the software that I would need. I figured out quickly that google's site for Android doesn't offer the bundles anymore for eclipse and android sdk. I came to this forum and downloaded the bundle and got the errors mentioned above. I'm currently running Fedora 21 and I installed the latest version of eclipse and I installed JDK 7. Everything is working great so far and I'm on chapter 3. My main question is this, will I be able to use Android Studio when I get to the android section or do you prefer that I install the plugins for android in eclipse until I complete the book.

All the code will run without issues on Android Studio! If you are comfortable with the IDE, you will have no problems.

Hi,

I have just started following chapter 2, but eclipse is no longer supported. So I naturally downloaded Android Studio assuming it should still be ok to follow the book. Is this correct?

Edit - I tried to installed the above Eclipse but when I get the Path error and try to follow the link in the book to resolve the error, the page is not found.

Not sure if its worth trying to install the eclipse with ADT or use the new?

Zymon, If you are using an IDE for the first time, stick with ADT. Here's a fix for the path: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/path.xml
Let me know if you aren't able to get it working. I'll do everything I can to get you up and running. The problem with the new Android Studio is that it does not let you create Java projects.
